CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Investigators say a man has died after being hit by a train in south Charlotte in January.
Officers with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Major Crash Unit were called to Archdale Road near South Boulevard just before 4pm on Tuesday, January 21st after a man was reportedly hit by a train.
The pedestrian, who has been identified as 40-year-old Toby Pires, was transported to Atrium Health Main with life-threatening injuries immediately after the accident.
The preliminary investigation revealed that Pires attempted to cross the tracks with a group of people as a freight train was approaching, according to a news release from CMPD.
Investigators say everyone made it across the tracks expect for Pires. Police say Pires remained on the tracks and the train was not able to stop in time to avoid a collision.
Pires died from the injuries he sustained in the accident on February 9th. The accident is still being investigated and police ask any witnesses to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
