Triple Murder Investigation Underway In Alexander County After Remains Identified
ALEXANDER COUNTY, N.C. — The Alexander County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a triple murder after receiving human remain results matching a missing woman.
The sheriff’s office received a call from Sheriff Richard Vaughn of Grayson County, Virginia on Tuesday in regards to Maria Calderon Martinez who went missing from Alexander County on June 15, 2019.
According to a news release, Martinez’s remains were found in a burned vehicle in Virginia on November 4, 2019, along with two other bodies. This was confirmed after the medical examiner in Roanoke, Virginia had made a positive identification on the remains of Martinez.
She was reported missing after an incident that happened at a residence in the Sugar Loaf Community along with her boyfriend Juan Carlos Mendez-Pena and his friend Luis Fernando Sanchez.
The incident involved the residence burning with her two kids, Angel Pacheco and America Pacheco, located inside.
Areli Aguire-Avilez and Heidi Wolfe have been charged in connection to that incident with three counts of First Degree Murder and are currently in custody at the Alexander County Detention Center, according to detectives.
Alexander County Sheriff’s Office is working with the medical examiner’s office in Roanoke, Virginia for further identification of the two other bodies which are believed to be Mendez-Pena and Sanchez .
