Stay-At-Home Order Begins in NC as Officials Work To Stockpile Medical Supplies

CHARLOTTE, NC – The new reality setting in for millions of North Carolinians. The stay-at-home order in effect until at least April 29th.

“The only way we can win and save as many lives as possible is if we all do our part and stay home,” said Dr. Mandy Cohen, the North Carolina Health Director.

On Monday, Cohen stressed the importance of Governor Cooper’s stay-at-home order.

“Everyone needs to be doing their part to make sure that these measures do impact the spread of the virus,” said Dr. Cohen.

Essential businesses will remain open. People can still exercise outdoors and make trips to grocery stores, pharmacies, and hardware stores. 

People can also go to restaurants for takeout, to care for a friend or family member And to doctors appointments. 

“I expect to see COVID 19 in every county in North Carolina within the next couple of days,” said Dr. Cohen.

The state is preparing for an influx of patients in the coming weeks. 

Right now there are 137 people hospitalized with COVID-19. There are 6200 empty hospital beds, which is About 40% of the state’s capacity. 

“We feel like we have the capacity we need right now,” said Dr. Cohen.

Medical supplies are being delivered by the truckload from the national stockpile.

“We have a team working to purchase as much as we can on the private market,” said Mike Sprayberry, the Emergency Management Director, We’ve placed orders so far totaling about 92 million dollars.”

Without a vaccine or treatment for COVID 19, Cohen says social distancing is truly the only way to slow the spread. 

“Staying home will save lives,” said Dr. Cohen.
