CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police are investigating after a three-year-old accidentally shot himself in the leg in west Charlotte.
Around 10am on April 1st, officers with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department responded to a shooting on Nobles Avenue. Upon arriving, they located a three-year-old suffering from a non-life threatening gunshot wound to his leg, according to a news release.
Police say the child was transported to a local hospital and is expected to survive. During the course of the investigation, detectives learned the child accidentally shot himself after locating an unsecured firearm that belonged to his legal guardian, according to a news release.
Ta’Mara Andrews was issued a citation for child neglect and storage of firearms to protect minors.
CMPD says they want to remind gun owners to make sure they have their weapons secured, especially since people are having to stay inside due to the Stay At Home orders in the county and the state.
