Wilson’s World: Placing the Flags for The 2020 Flags of Remembrance Memorial Begins Today
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – As in years past, on September 11th the F.F. Steven Coakley Foundation will honor the victims of the terrorists attack on the World Trade Center’s Twin Towers on 9/11/01 by displaying 2,977 American flags along with the name and a picture of each life that was taken. And today at Romare Bearden Park volunteers will gather to again continue their promise to never forget as they began constructing the Flags of Remembrance Memorial. The memorial will continue, although due to the pandemic and health restrictions there will be adjustments. Wilson talked with Edmund Walker of the FF Steven Coakley Foundation about what will be different about this year’s ceremony.
Tomorrow, Friday, September 11th the reflective memorial will begin at Romare Bearden Park at 8:30am. The memorial event will consist of the tolling of a bell at prominent times of 8:46, 9:03, 9:37, 9:59, 10:03 & 10:28 and will include a replica of the Twin Towers to sign for sharing your thoughts. A steel beam from the WTC will be on display.
The flags will remain up until Monday. Visitors are invited to come to the park and view the flags while following social distancing guidelines.
