CMPD: 31-Year-Old Man Charged With Murder In North Charlotte Homicide Case That Happened December 2019

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Detectives have charged a 31-year-old man with murder in connection to a north Charlotte homicide case that happened in December of 2019.

After a continued investigation, Homicide Unit detectives, with the assistance of The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), identified Steven Staples as a suspect in the Anthony Leakes murder case.

Staples, who is already in custody on pending charges, has been served with additional warrants for Murder and Firearm by a Felon, police say.

Original Story (12/26/19):

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A homicide investigation is underway after a victim was found with multiple gunshot wounds by his girlfriend within his north Charlotte home on December 23.

The victim has now been identified as 40-year-old Anthony Devon Leakes.

When Leakes’ girlfriend found him she called 911 after seeing that he was shot multiple times. The North Division CMPD Officers responded to the call around 9:30 p.m. that night.

Leakes was pronounced dead by the medic at the scene on Elliott Drive off of Sunset Road.

The investigation into this case is currently active and ongoing.
