CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg police say a cyclist has died following being struck by a vehicle in west Charlotte early Monday morning.
Officers responded around 5 a.m. to Sam Wilson Road in reference to the collision which involved a Hyundai SUV and a bicycle. Upon arrival, officers located the SUV that had collided into the back of the bike. The rider of the bike was also located in the roadway.
After an initial investigation officers determined that the driver of the Hyundai, identified as 44-year-old Latonya Holt, was driving on Sam Wilson Road from Moores Chapel Road towards Interstate 85. At the same time 34-year-old Johnny Wayne McKinney was riding his bicycle on the same road when the collision happened which threw him several feet into the air before coming to a rest in the road.
The Charlotte Fire Department and Medic responded to the scene where McKinney was pronounced dead.
Officers say that section of the road was dark, with no street lights. McKinney was not wearing any reflective clothing or a helmet which has been determined to be contributing factors in the crash, a news release stated.
Holt was not injured during the incident, officers report.
The investigation into this case is active and ongoing. No charges have been filed in this case.
