CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department says there is not an active shooter in uptown Charlotte after posts on social media Tuesday indicated otherwise.
The social media posting showed a text message sent by Duke Energy to employees informing them that their building were on lockdown and employees should seek shelter. That lockdown has since been lifted.
Police say a security guard called 911 after a third party reported hearing someone say they had a gun on South Church Street, nearby the Knight Theater.
When officers arrived at the scene the security guard informed officers that he never observed anyone with a gun.
Charlotte police say they then searched the area and were unable to locate anyone with a firearm or any evidence of a shooting. Officers are continuing to monitor the zone.
Duke Energy provided WCCB with the following statement about the reports of an active shooter:
Earlier today, we were made aware of a potential threat near a Duke Energy office building in Uptown Charlotte. We followed our protocols to alert employees and locked down our buildings. We contacted the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) who immediately responded. Based on their investigation, our building lockdown has been lifted.
