Vigil Held For 16-Year-Old Shot And Killed Saturday Night In Northeast Charlotte
CHARLOTTE, NC – Holding pictures of their family member and friend, dozens of people marched through the streets near the Orchard Trace apartments in Northeast Charlotte on Monday night. They were chanting the name “Ruben Contreras.”
“Ruben was a great kid. He was funny. He loved to laugh,” said his aunt Christina Hernandez.
The 16-year-old was shot at a shopping center on Saturday night. He ran through the woods and died outside the apartments.
“I’m amazed at all the people who showed up. It just shows me how much Ruben was loved,” said Hernandez.
Ruben’s death is the city’s 104th homicide of 2020. There were 107 homicides all of last year.
It’s a grim milestone during a deadly year.
“It is disheartening. It’s really sad,” said Lucille Puckett.
Puckett is an advocate for families impacted by gun violence.
“Just to see another mother hurting the way I was hurting four years ago, it’s like opening up new wounds. the pain is just unbearable,” said Puckett.
People set up candles and pictures, told stories and remembered their son, brother, and friend.
“I hope they remember his smile,” said Hernandez.
CMPD says they are still looking for the suspect in Ruben’s killing.
