A Call To Cancel A Local Pro-Life Event Due To COVID Concerns
CHARLOTTE, NC. — Anti-abortion group Love Life is holding its biggest event of the year, the Love Life Week 40 Prayer Walk, in Charlotte on Saturday. Reiley Baker says the event draws thousands of people from across the state and country.
“And from previous experience with this organization, they do have smaller events every weekend. They don’t wear masks, they don’t socially distance and it’s very worrying,” says Baker.
Baker volunteers at a medical facility next to the property the organization owns. She started a petition on Monday ago calling on city leaders to stop the March. It already has more than 100,000 signatures.
“Just with the recent spikes in COVID cases nationally and statewide and knowing that Mecklenburg County has the most cases and deaths out of any county in North Carolina, it’s very worrying.”
City council member Dimple Ajmera tells WCCB council reached out to CMPD to ensure officers will monitor the event and also encourage compliance with the COVID-19 related orders while conducting first amendment activities. She goes onto say council was informed by CMPD that the event is being held on private property and they were also advised by the event organizer that they will not be marching, they will be praying and staying on the property. The city has denied the permit for the walk.
The organization posted a statement on social media saying in part:
“Masks and hand sanitizer are provided at all prayer walk locations. We encourage all participating to wear face coverings, especially in states and cities where they are mandated. For those who are medically fragile or who live in households with at-risk family members, we are encouraging you to participate online.”
