A Local Family Is Raising Money For Healthcare Workers After Their Loved One Died From COVID

CHARLOTTE, NC. — Ron Massingale was a family man who was larger than life, just ask his three children.

“So for something like this to happen is exactly what he would want is for us to be able to give these people the greatest Christmas ever and give them a little bit of a break from the reality that they’ve been living,” says Bryan Massingale.

Ron was diagnosed with COVID on November 11. His health, falling quickly. He was in the hospital seven days later, and in Atrium’s ICU on November 21st. His three children, Laura, Ronnie and Bryan could only see their dad through facetime calls the hospital helped set up.

“No matter who it was, when we talk to him and we got our update, it was not only the information that we needed and we were seeking but it was also just done in this loving manner, of hay I am loving on your dad while you can’t be here,” says Ronnie Massingale.

Ron’s fight with the virus ended on December 11th. The next step, planning his funeral.

It was one of those things, we’re all just sitting around the big table and all the questions are coming at us from the funeral director. And said well is there anything you guys would like to do in lieu of flowers? And that’s just just kind of where the idea quickly came together.”

The idea: a fundraiser asking for donations for the heroic front line workers that tirelessly attended to Ron and other ICU patients. The GoFundMe has raised more than $8,000.
