CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department are investigating a fatal accident that happened on Sardis Road North on December 27th. Police say a vehicle ran off the road and struck a utility pole shortly before 9:30pm.
When officers arrived on the scene, they found a 2018 Hyundai Tucson with significant damage to the front-end of the vehicle and power lines lying in the roadway, according to a news release.
Police say the driver of the vehicle, 71-year-old James Webster, was pronounced dead on the scene by first responders. Initial investigation reveals that Webster was driving southwest on Sardis Road North when he entered a curve, drove off the road, and struck an utility pole, according to a news release.
Police say Webster was not wearing a seat belt. Detectives say alcohol impairment and excessive speed appear to be contributing factors in the collision.
