Local Woman Says Her Dog Was Bloodied And Bruised After Grooming Appointment

INDIAN TRAIL, N.C. – Amber Lodge says her two-year-old English Springer Spaniel named Waylon is a good dog, but has never been well behaved for the groomer. “I told her about that before I dropped him off, she said, ‘It’s fine, it’s fine, I work with dogs all the time like this.'”

Lodge made a last minute appointment with an Indian Trail groomer she had never used before, and says she warned her about Waylon. “She knew right up front that he did not like grooming,” says Lodge.

Lodge went to get Waylon from Pretty Paws Grooming several hours later, paid the $80 grooming fee, put him in her vehicle, and started driving home. She says, “I heard a noise that I didn’t know what the noise was…the noise was coming from him.” And, “When he looked at me his eye was all bloodshot, his nose was pouring blood and the left side of his face was completely swollen.”

Lodge drove the dog to Carolina Animal Referral and Emergency. $318 dollars later, the veterinary diagnosis was “suspect trauma.”

WCCB asked the groomer to tell us her side of the story. Pretty Paws Grooming owner Lisa Bullock wrote to us, in part, saying, “I groomed a very aggressive dog that was trying to bite and scratch me…I was not aware of injury of any kind to the dog while he was here.” (Click here to read Bullock’s entire statement.) WCCB also asked Bullock if she would pay the dog’s vet bill. She said the “dog injured itself” and that she “does not accept liability for the vet bill.”

Lodge, meantime, has no intention of dropping this. She’s filed an animal cruelty complaint with the Union County Sheriff’s Office and spoken with an attorney. She says, “I want to be reimbursed for the vet bill I shouldn’t have to pay for.” And, “The way I sent my dog is how I should have received him back.”

The groomer used a muzzle on the dog while he was with her. She says the dog probably scratched its face trying to get the muzzle off. Another client tells WCCB this same groomer lost her dog while it was at her shop for grooming back in 2019. That dog hasn’t been seen since.
