Boy Scout Troop Trailer & Camping Equipment Stolen in Gaston Co.

GASTON COUNTY, N.C. – Thousands of dollars worth of equipment was stolen from a boy scout troop in Gaston County.

Someone took a trailer full of camping gear parked outside the Troop 501 hut sometime last week.

“I just couldn’t believe it. It’s just, somebody’s gotta be pretty low to do something like that,” says scoutmaster Ben Bonds.

He wonders why someone would steal from a boy scout troop.

“Well besides the trailer, they got away with one of our portable kitchens and the cleaning supplies, utensils, that we use to cook and clean with,” Bonds says.

The estimated value of everything taken is between $7,000 and $8,000.

“It’s hard to believe that someone would decide and actually do that,” says 15-year-old troop member Eben Mathis.

Mathis has been a part of the troop for several years.

“So when I got there and I noticed it wasn’t there, it was really disappointing because it means that we can’t go on camping trips until we get at least some of the equipment restored,” Mathis says.

Troop leaders say the outpouring of support from the community has been heartwarming.

Other troops and community members have offered donations to help replace what they lost.

But fundraising rules are very strict.

The troop isn’t allowed to solicit donations or start a GoFundMe page.

“It’s up for the community to decide they want to help and to reach out to us,” Bonds says.
