A Weddington Teacher Is Suspended After Video Posted On Social Media Shows The Teacher Saying A Racial Slur

CHARLOTTE, NC- A Union county teacher is suspended while the school district investigates the use of a racial slur in front of students.

The situation happened during a zoom call at Weddington High School earlier this week.

The Union county public school district telling us the personnel matter is being investigated.

The situation involves this zoom meeting with students. Video was posted on a Union County moms group Facebook page.

“Somebody sent me a text and I did not like the language that was phrased in this text,” said Powell Williams, a Weddington History teacher and soccer coach.

The video appears to show Williams reading a text message that he says was sent to him. He says it was upsetting. It’s unclear why he brought up the message.

A student then asks Williams what the message says.

“It said “you, question mark question mark.” And I said, Who is this? And they go, “Me”, can I say it, “Me N—-” , like I got a huge problem with that,” read Williams.

A Union County parent who spoke with WCCB but didn’t want to give their identity for fear of retaliation said, “he was the adult in the room and what he demonstrated to the students was inappropriate.”

A recent Weddington graduate tells us they aren’t’ surprised by the insensitive incident.

School officials aren’t commenting further on Williams’ future at Weddington.

Williams goes on to say in the video that he has a problem with whoever used that language and then moves on. The video posted on the Facebook group has received dozens of comments.
