CLT City Councilman Tariq Bokhari Doubles Down On His Idea To Criminalize Helping The Homeless
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – City council member Tariq Bokhari getting a lot of feedback after he suggested penalizing people who hand out things like food and clothing directly to those on the streets. He said, “I think we need a heavier dose of tough love.” And, “They’re (the people handing out food, etc.) only making themselves feel good. They’re hurting the ultimate (homeless) folks. Perhaps we explore making that a misdemeanor. We have to do something different or we’re never going to get ahead of it.”
Mecklenburg County Commissioner Pat Cotham tweeted in response, “Headed to the slammer for multiple violations of hot sandwiches, ding dongs, assorted cokes, chips, blankets, tents, bus tickets, socks, hand warmers, rain ponchos, hats, gloves, hoodies, and hugs. #NeedBailMoney.”
Our question of the night: does Bokhari deserve to be penalized for his comment?
