CMPD: 29-Year-Old & Juvenile Charged In Fatal 2019 North Charlotte Apartment Shooting

The Latest (9/3/21):

Charlotte-Mecklenburg detectives have additionally charged a 16-year-old boy for the murder of Samuel Stitt.

Police say Stitt was charged with murder, attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon, and conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon for his involvement in the 2019 fatal north Charlotte shooting.

Update (8/18/21):

Three years ago a 23-year-old was found shot to death in a north Charlotte apartment. On Wednesday, detectives announced that they identified and charged a suspect with murder in the case.

Through a continued investigation, 29-year-old James Robert McIlwaine was identified by Charlotte-Mecklenburg police as a suspect in the homicide case of Samuel Stitt. Warrants were then issued for his arrest.

Police said McIlwaine is currently in the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office for other non-related charges and will be served with warrants for murder, attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon and conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon.

CHARLOTTE, NC — The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department has identified the city’s 69th homicide victim.

Police say Samuel Stitt, 23, was found shot to death inside an apartment at the Somerset Apartments on Ventura Way Drive around 8:47pm.

CMPD has not yet released any information on a possible suspect, or what may have led to the shooting.

This is an ongoing investigation.
