Wingate Prepares For SAC Volleyball Championship
WINGATE, N.C. — The mood of Wingate volleyball was lively and loose Thursday afternoon thanks to the work they put in earlier in the week
On the brink of seeing their run of 16 straight appearances in the semis of the South Atlantic Conference Volleyball Championship snapped, Wingate had to take it to another level to down Mars Hill on Tuesday.
“I think we showed what kind of team we are,” said senior setter Shannon Kasprak. “We’re really resilient, so we embraced that challenge, they were up two sets and we weren’t going to let them have it. ”
Like they have all season, the Bulldogs battled to beat Mars Hill and advance to the SAC semis for their 17th straight appearance.
“We had a great crowd,” said Wingate head coach Shelton Collier. “A lot of our other student athletes were there, they stayed with us, they helped push us, and then our team just drove and said there’s only one way to do this, and that’s five the hard way. We managed to do that, we’re still in the tournament and that feels good.”
The tournament heads over to the Rock Hill Sports and Event Center now where Wingate will take on Anderson in the semis. The Bulldogs beat the Trojans in 5 sets last month.
“Every single time we play it’s a 50-50 battle,” Kasprak said. “Everyone is super confident in their position, super confident in one another, and I think we’re just going to come out fighting and play our Wingate volleyball.”
” I think we’re getting better,” added Collier. “We didn’t get off to a great start this year and then we’ve gotten increasingly better each week ,we’ve had a lot of players step up and improve. I think they’re excited about trying to win this SAC tournament and they’re excited about doing something in the NCAA Tournament so we’re kind of in an upward swing and we’re enjoying it.”
