CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Detectives are investigating a fatal crash after a suspected drunk driver lost control of his car and drove through an intersection in east Charlotte early Saturday morning.
On February 19th at 2:12 a.m., officers responded to the crash with reported injuries on Albemarle Road.
At the scene, officers located a white 2017 Dodge Challenger overturned in the parking lot of 5740 Albemarle Road.
The Charlotte Fire Department and Medic also responded to the scene.
Detectives say the unrestrained driver and the restrained front right seat passenger were taken by Medic to a local hospital with serious injuries.
The unrestrained back seat passenger was pronounced dead at the scene, according to medic.
Initial investigation reveals Anthonie Fennell, 25, was driving the Dodge south on Central Avenue when he drove straight through an intersection and off the roadway.
Fennell entered the parking lot next and struck four metal poles before going airborne and overturning, according to a news release.
Police say the Dodge struck five parked cars in the parking lot of the used car lot on Albemarle Road before coming to a stop.
Latrice Harris, 22, was the front seat passenger and she suffered serious injuries including broken bones and lacerations, according to a news release.
Detectives say Noah McClaskey, 24, was the back seat passenger killed in the crash.
A DWI Task Force Officer responded to the hospital and determined that the driver of the Dodge, Fennell, showed signs of impairment.
Fennel’s impairment and reckless driving was determined to have been the cause of this crash resulting in the death of McClaskey and the serious injury of Harris.
Officers obtained two warrants for Felony Death by Motor Vehicle and Felony Serious Injury by Vehicle for his arrest.
Citations were issued to him for Driving While Impaired, Reckless Driving, and Failure to Maintain Lane.
Police say Fennel is currently hospitalized at Atrium Health Main due to injuries he sustained from this crash.
He will be transported to the Mecklenburg County Intake Center and served with the warrants once he is released from the hospital.
An attempt will be made to interview him upon his release from the hospital as well.
The investigation into this case is active and ongoing.
