UNC Charlotte Partners With Duke Energy To Create The ‘PoleVolt’ Electric Car Charging Station

CHARLOTTE N.C. – Charlotte launches a new electric car charging station using technology from streetlight infrastructures to reduce the cost of charging stations.

Duke Energy and UNC Charlotte’s Energy Production and Infrastructure Center (EPIC) have launched a new project called the “The PoleVolt” which is the first universal electric car charging station of its kind.

The new solution uses existing streetlight infrastructure to slash the cost of installing charging stations by as much as 50%.

The unit has been installed at the Ritz at Washington Heights in Charlotte’s West End. In 2018 the leaders of this community formed the Historic West End Green District in order to promote improved air quality, reduce carbon emissions and improve health.

Duke Energy’s North Carolina President says Charlotte’s goal is to eliminate the barriers to access to charging stations. According to Charlotte officials,  the ‘PoleVolt’ will serve as an innovative design that promotes equality and cleaner air for the future.

“The transition by vehicle manufacturers to electric vehicles is upon us and this station is just one example of how North Carolina is getting ready, “The quicker we move, the more affordable electric vehicles will become for everyday people. Our state is moving toward an equitable clean energy economy and public-private partnerships like this one will help make that happen.” – Governor Roy Cooper
