Local Church Gives $1 Million Dollars To Complete Habitat for Humanity Project On Land Donated By The Brooks Brothers
CHARLOTTE, NC – A local church is giving one million dollars to help complete an East Charlotte Habitat for Humanity project on land that was donated by the late restaurant owner Scott Brooks and his brother David.
“I think itβs a proud moment for the city of Charlotte also,” said David Brooks.
In 2018, brothers Scott and David Brooks donated the land to the city, an idea given to them by David’s wife.
“Bingo. It really his us and you know itβs going to be perfect. Itβs going to be absolutely perfect,” explained David Brooks.
In 2019, Scott Brooks was shot and killed during a robbery while he was opening up Brookβs Sandwhich House. A longtime restaurant known for itβs burgers and impact on the community.
Now David is able to see he and his brothers dream come true.
“Itβs going to be such a boost for people, you know, hard working people like ourselves, all of us. Itβs going to be appreciated,” said Brooks.
“We see land scarcity as one of the major issues or obstacles to affordable housing in Charlotte. So this is a huge boom to us,” said Bob Glusenkamp. He is the Habitat Vice President of Construction operations. He says each unit will be about 1100 square feet, have two bedrooms and two bathrooms, as well as parking spaces.
“Home ownership is one of the best ways to gain equity and then transfer wealth through the generations,”said Glusenkamp.
The project is also being made possible thanks to a one million dollar donation from Myers Park Presbyterian Church. A gesture that will have an impact for decades to come.
“When we provide affordable housing, we prevent homelessness and we have a bigger impact in the community,” said Patty Arcia.
