Passenger Ejected From U-Haul Dies After Crash At Harding High School

CHARLOTTE, N.C.– Detectives are investigating a fatal crash involving a U-Haul at Harding High School.  The accident was reported on March 21st at 5:30pm at the school on Freedom Drive near Alleghany Street.

Upon arriving at the scene, officers reportedly found a 2012 GMC Savana U-Haul with heavy front end damage.

The front passenger, identified as Michael Stinson, was reportedly ejected from the vehicle.  The driver, Trish Waddell, was partially ejected and suffered severe injuries, according to a news release.

Police say the two were not wearing a seatbelt.  Medics transported both Stinson and Waddell to a nearby hospital, where Stinson later succumbed to his injuries.

Investigators say Waddell was traveling west on Allegany Street at a high speed when she veered left, over corrected, and then ran off the right side of the road striking two trees. Waddell’s vehicle went through the fence of Harding High School and struck two more trees before coming to a halt, police say.

Investigators say Waddell wasn’t impaired but speed appeared to be a factor in the case, according to a news release.

Waddell has been charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, reckless driving, and possession of an open container of alcohol in the passenger area of a motor vehicle.
