Woman Asks Her Partner To Pay Her To Have Their Baby

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – It’s a reddit post gone viral. A man’s partner wants him to pay her $50,000-$100,000 for her to have their child. According to a Buzzfeed article, the couple is not legally married, they keep their finances separate, and split everything 50-50.

She doesn’t feel being pregnant would be a 50-50 split of finances, because she has to take a financial hit, and he does not. The post reads, in part, “She wants me to pay her $50,000-$100,000 to compensate the loss of her salary for 6 to 12 months as a result of her having our child.”

It’s an interesting proposal, and we asked people around town what they thought of the idea:
“If she can get it!”
“If they both wanna have the baby…if he makes a bunch of money. But, that’s still a lot to ask from someone.”
“I don’t think it’s fair, that he should be paying her, but I get where she’s coming from.”

While the original reddit post was taken down and could all be very fake, it does bring up an interesting point about the “motherhood penalty.” According to the National Women’s Law Center, moms make $18,000 less annually than dads. Part of the gap is because women tend to be the ones to take off to rear children. According to child care provider Bright Horizons, 41 percent of employed Americans perceive working moms to be less devoted to their work. And according to the U.S. Department of Labor, only 23 percent of American workers get paid family leave through their employers.

Our question of the night: should women be paid for being pregnant?
