GASTON COUNTY, S.C. –Gaston County Police Animal Control and Enforcement responded to a call where a rabid bat was found in a resident’s yard on Sunday, April 24th.
Officials with Animal Care and Enforcement arrived to find the bat still alive. The bat was captured, euthanized, and sent directly to the State Of North Carolina Virology Lab for rabies testing.
On Monday, April 25th Gaston County Animal Care and Enforcement received confirmation that the bat tested positive for rabies.
Animal Care and Enforcement performed a neighborhood canvas on Monticello Drive to notify the community of the positive rabies results. Officials requested residents verify rabies vaccinations among families and all pets in the area.
“By keeping your pets current on their rabies vaccines, you are protecting them from contracting the disease from wildlife and spreading the disease to your family and other animals and people in the community.” says officials with the Gaston County Police Animal Care and Enforcement Division.
This event represents the fourth confirmed rabies case in Gaston County this year.
