Monroe Police Arrest Man Charged With Murder After Boyte Street Shooting

The Latest:

Monroe Police arrested a man suspected of shooting and killing Jaleel Nivens outside a convenience store in Gastonia Thursday night.

Police say Billy Barrino was taken into custody of the Union County Jail, where he now being held with no bond for 1st Degree Murder and Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon.

“This is an excellent example of the great work our officers do on a daily basis,” said Monroe Police Chief Bryan Gilliard. “We are grateful for the support and assistance we received from fellow law enforcement agencies and we are happy to have this individual in custody and off the streets.”

Update (4/26/22):

Monroe Police Department has issued a warrant for the murder of Jaleel Nivens. The suspect, 25-year-old Billy Barrino is being charged with first-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Police Say Barrino is considered armed and dangerous.

MONROE, N.C. — Monroe Police are investigating a shooting where a man was fatally shot on Boyte Street near Highway 74.

The Monroe Police Department posted on Facebook that just before 5 p.m. Saturday, Jaleel Nivens was found after being shot several times.

Nivens was taken to Atrium Main, but later passed away.

Police say that there were multiple people who saw the shooting happen, but no one has come forward with information yet.

There is a potential cash reward of $5,000 for this case.
