KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — A powerful earthquake struck a rural, mountainous region of eastern Afghanistan near the Pakistani border, killing at least 1,000 people and injuring another 1,500 others. The 5.9 magnitude quake Wednesday was the deadliest quake to strike Afghanistan in two decades.
Officials warn the death toll will likely rise.
