Soggy Stretch Ahead
Temperatures take a tumble as we head into the final days of 2023.
Happy Boxing Day! The second half of our Christmas Day was decidedly soggy, and the wet times continue through our Tuesday. While it won’t be a complete washout, significant rain chances linger throughout the day before clearing out by Wednesday afternoon. Short-range models are suggesting areas in the western Piedmont and Foothills stand to gain the most rain, which could total up to 1″ over the next 24 hours. A rumble of thunder is also possible in the afternoon. Despite the clouds and widespread shower activity, temperatures will remain well above average in the 50s and 60s both today and tomorrow.
Abundant sunshine returns on Thursday, but don’t expect the warmer temperatures to last. Highs will reach the mid-to-upper 50s Thursday afternoon before crashing into the 20s and 30s as we wake up on Friday. An upper-level low reaches the Carolinas within this timeframe; a few stray rain/sleet showers are possible as we start the final day of the holiday-shortened workweek. The final weekend of 2023 is trending cold, but largely dry; a few rain or snow showers are possible as we head into 2024.
