Bitter Cold Bites Carolinas
Temperatures recover a bit into the second half of the workweek before another bout of cold air crashes into the Carolinas by the weekend.
Brr! Lows in the single-digits, teens, and 20s to kick off this Wednesday make this morning the coldest we’ve seen in over a year. Feels-like temperatures are well below zero in the High Country; a Wind Chill Advisory is in place for the mountains through the morning. Despite plentiful sunshine, highs will struggle to clear the 20s and 30s this afternoon. Temperatures gradually near 50° in the Metro by the end of the workweek. We’ll need to watch for a weak disturbance that sweeps into the Carolinas late Thursday into early Friday, but impacts appear to be minor for now. That said, a light wintry mix is possible north of I-40 early Friday morning before clearing arrives after sunrise.
Another rush of cold air shuts the door on any prolonged warm-up by the weekend. Lows will return to well below normal values as we wake up on Saturday. Highs may only end up a few degrees above freezing for the first half of the weekend as temperatures crash into the teens and single digits across our area Saturday night. Near-average conditions return by the start of the next workweek.
