Brief Relief From Frigid Temps
A few showers arrive overnight in the Piedmont and Foothills, but the big story will be another significant snowfall in the High Country.
It’s not quite as cold as yesterday morning, but the entirety of the WCCB Charlotte viewing area is waking up to another hard freeze. After failing to crack 40° for the first time in over a year, temperatures should top out about 10° warmer this Thursday afternoon. Clouds will build in throughout the latter half of the day following a mostly sunny start. We’ll also need to watch out for a few scattered showers overnight into the early morning hours on Friday; the rain will be light and should largely clear out by tomorrow’s sunrise. A few sleet pellets or wet flakes may mix in north of I-40, but the vast majority of the wintry weather will remain in the High Country, which will see its second significant snowfall in under a week. Short-range models continue to disagree on exactly how intense the snow will be, but most areas between 2000′-4500′ will see between 2-4″, with even higher totals possible above the 4500′ mark through Saturday.
Highs will top out near 50° again on Friday as dry air clears out any leftover cloud coverage from tonight’s system. The sunshine will be nice – the cold, not so much. Temperatures take another dive heading into Saturday morning as lows bottom out in the teens and single digits for most. The Piedmont and Foothills will struggle to clear the freezing mark through the first half of the weekend, while the High Country may not even get out of the teens. Temperatures gradually bounce back into the final full week of January.
