Gray Skies, Warmer Highs Ahead

Scattered light rain today becomes heavier and more widespread as we delve deeper into the workweek.

We hope you’ve enjoyed the sunshine while it lasted, because we won’t see much blue sky over the next several days. Clouds have built in across the Carolinas this Tuesday morning as a rainmaking system, fueled by Gulf moisture, approaches from the southwest. Overcast skies stick around throughout the day, but overall rain chances will be in the isolated range; anything we do see in terms of shower activity will be light. Rain chances and totals begin to pick up overnight into Wednesday as the storm system draws near. The biggest threat for heavy rain lies to the northwest of the Metro, but everyone should see at least a quarter-inch through midweek. Temperatures will also be on the rise, going from the 40s and lower 50s this afternoon to 50s and lower 60s on Wednesday.

Opportunities for showers and even a few thunderstorms continue to ascend as we head into the final two days of the workweek. Temperatures will soar as well, approaching 70Β° in the Metro on both Thursday and Friday. Fortunately, the severe risk appears to be low despite the increase in energy. That said, we’ll need to watch a second system that arrives by Saturday night for some strong storms. Rain totals will end up between 1-3″ over the next five days, with locally higher amounts possible to the northwest. Stable air finally filters in by Sunday afternoon, setting us up for a beautiful sunny day in the 50s and 60s to close out January’s final weekend. The transitionary week between January and February will start out drier and cooler.
