MONROE, N.C. – A Union County mother is facing felony charges after intentionally overdosing her two young children with prescription drugs, according to the Union County Sheriff’s Office.

Sarah Jones, 28, of Monroe, is charged with two counts of felony child abuse.

An investigation started after her two children – ages 8 and 9 – were admitted to the hospital in March of this year and showed symptoms of a narcotics overdose, the sheriff’s office said. The children were given substantial medical treatment for potentially life-threatening illnesses.

Officials said that Jones intentionally and maliciously overdosed her children by giving them large amounts of prescription narcotics, including Tramadol and Benadryl.

The children were transitioned into foster care and are in good condition at this time.

The sheriff’s office determined that Jones has a history of intentionally overdosing her children and confirmed a months-long pattern of abuse.

Jones received a 25,000 secured bond, which was posted, and she is no longer in custody.

This case is still an ongoing investigation. Anyone with information on it is asked to call 911, the UCSO Main Office at 704-283-3789, or Union County Crime Stoppers at 704-283-5600.
