Sweltering Stretch Ahead

Rain chances will be few and far between over the next few days as highs soar into near-record territory.

We’re already dealing with classic mid-July heat and humidity as we near the midpoint of the month, and it’s only getting hotter as we head into the workweek. Highs will soar into the mid-to-upper 90s across the Piedmont and Foothills on Sunday as as strong area of high pressure attempts to usurp the Carolinas from the stationary front that’s plagued our forecast for the past week. While a few stray storms are possible in the afternoon, most spots will remain dry through the weekend. The only good news for people trying to stay cool is that humidity levels will take a bit of a dive as the aforementioned front begins to crumble.

The heat cranks up even further on Monday. Highs will approach 100° to kick off the workweek; if we get there, it will be the Queen City’s first time cracking the triple digits multiple times in a year since 2015. We’ll get awfully close to 100° again on Tuesday before a rainmaking system begins to push in from the northwest. While isolated storms are possible earlier in the week, more significant rain chances arrive on Wednesday and Thursday. Medium-range models are showing the potential for damaging wind gusts in these mid-to-late-week storms, but the overall severe risk appears low. Meaningful rain chances will likely stick around into next weekend as the system stalls over the Carolinas.
