Drier Close to Weekend

Enjoy the slightly lower humidity while it lasts - another steamy and stormy stretch lies ahead.

At long last, abundant sunshine and drier air have set up shop across the western half of the Carolinas for July’s final weekend. Highs will soar higher near 90º across the Piedmont and Foothills on Sunday, but a slight drop in humidity will make the heat a bit more bearable. Don’t expect the good times to last very long. The strong ridge of high pressure to our north, making this nice weather possible, will quickly crumble as it fades to the northeast. With our guardian angel gone, the swamp monster from the southwest will call the Carolinas home again. Expect scattered showers and storms to arrive as soon as Monday morning, with multiple rounds of rain possible throughout the day. A few afternoon storms may be on the stronger side, but the main threat to watch will be the flooding potential.

A steamy and stormy pattern ushers us into the remainder of the workweek. Highs will cruise back into the 90s on Tuesday after struggling to get out of the 70s and 80s on Monday. Temperatures will continue to rise as we head into the back half of the week, with pop-up isolated storms bringing our only relief from the heat.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) is tracking a potential tropical system well east of the Caribbean. The tropical wave has a 30% chance of becoming our fourth named storm, Debby, over the next seven days. We’ll watch this system carefully as it treks westward.
