Lovely Labor Day, Another Taste of Fall Ahead
A few showers and storms may roll through our area in the morning, but an otherwise fantastic Labor Day is on the way.
The sweltering summer feelings have continued into September after a scorching start to Labor Day weekend. While most of us stayed dry on Saturday, we won’t be so lucky this Sunday evening. A Level 1 risk (out of 5) has been posted for the entirety of the WCCB Charlotte viewing area for strong, gusty storms as a cold front pushes in from the northwest overnight. Expect scattered storms to last well into the early morning hours on Monday before most of the moisture clears out by noon. A stray storm is possible, especially to the north and west, but most communities will enjoy a mostly sunny and breezy Labor Day.
Much cooler air filters into the Carolinas from the northeast by Tuesday. Highs will struggle to clear the 60s and 70s for much of the week ahead as the cooler air wedges into the Appalachians. The Tuesday-Thursday timeframe is trending drier, but mostly cloudy skies will be the norm. Rain chances pick up by Friday as tropical moisture approaches from the southwest.
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) is tracking a potential tropical system in the northern Gulf that will ultimately be responsible for rain chances in the Carolinas by the end of this coming week. The budding area of low pressure only has a 10% chance of becoming our next named storm as it comes ashore by Tuesday, but will bring a boatload of rain to the Deep South and Southeast as it slowly trudges eastward. The NHC is also tracking two other areas in the open Atlantic for development – one with a 40% chance of becoming a named storm as it slides eastward into the Caribbean. Direct impacts from a named storm in the Carolinas are unlikely this week, but it’s important to stay weather-wise as we head into the peak of hurricane season.
