Soggy start to workweek
Most communities will see 1-2" of rain through Wednesday morning.
Our first full weekend of December is ending on a fantastic note as sunny skies and comfy highs in the 50s and 60s settle into the Carolinas this Sunday. Enjoy the good times while they last – big changes arrive for the workweek ahead. A moisture-laden area of low pressure will sweep into the Carolinas from the southwest, bringing widespread rain and even a few rumbles of thunder to the WCCB Charlotte viewing area shortly after midnight Sunday into Monday. Wet roads are a certainty for your first commute of the week, but short-range models suggest that the rain lightens or even stops by the time you hit the roads between 7 and 9 am. Off-and-on isolated showers continue to pester us throughout our Monday as overcast skies remain.
Another round of moisture smacks into the Carolinas overnight Monday into Tuesday but should remain well south of the Queen City. We’ll want to focus more on Tuesday evening as a sharp cold front approaches from the northwest. While the overall severe threat Tuesday night is low, a few heavy thunderstorms packing gusty winds and localized torrential rainfall are possible. Widespread rain will continue into the early morning hours on Wednesday before the passage of the front. Despite the rain, temperatures remain warm by December’s standards in the 50s and 60s through Wednesday. Significant mountain snow is in the forecast between Wednesday afternoon and Friday morning as robust winds from the northwest set up shop. Outside of a stray flurry along I-40 and northward, the return of winter-like cold will be the only thing the Piedmont and Foothills see by the end of the workweek. It looks like next weekend will be sunny, chilly, and dry with highs in the 40s and 50s across the board.
