Arrests in 2011 murder cold case in Statesville

STATESVILLE, NC – It has taken more than a decade, but two men are now charged with the murder of Joseph “Joey” Brewer in Statesville in 2011.

Brewer was shot several times at the Myrtle Place Apartments on Jonathan Lane in Statesville on September 12, 2011.

In 2013, his family asked the District Attorney’s Office to have the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office take over the case from the Statesville Police Department.

The Sheriff’s Office says investigators spent thousands of hours investigating the case, and recently uncovered new evidence that led them to two suspects.

The Iredell County Grand Jury indicted John Chambers and O’Kiera Myers on December 4, 2024.

Investigators found Chambers is in the custody of the US Marshal Service.  He is set to serve time in federal prison on unrelated charges.

The Sherriff’s Office says law enforcement arrested Myers on Friday, December 6, 2024 at a business in Statesville.

Myers was out of jail on $500,000 secured bond for charges of First-Degree Murder, Felony Assault with a Deadly Weapon with Intent to Kill Inflicting Serious Injury and Felony Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, stemming from a 2019 crime.
