CHARLOTTE, N.C. – One person is dead after what police says appears to be an attempted car theft. It happened on 8th Street near Graham in Uptown. Police say a driver pulled up to an apartment complex and left their car running and unattended. When the driver came back, a stranger was inside the car, and the two began to fight.

Police say they got a call about multiple shots fired around 7PM Wednesday. When they arrived, officers found one person dead inside the vehicle. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Major Dave Johnson says, “Unfortunately, another tragic life lost in our jurisdiction. But homicide detectives are here, we got crime scene working diligently out here in the cold, to gather as much evidence as we can so we can get a full and complete picture of what happened here.”

Police remind people that even though it’s cold, it’s still illegal to leave an unlocked, running car unattended. Investigators say they are not looking for any suspects and all parties involved are being interviewed.
