UPDATE: National Weather Service confirms EF1 tornado in Union Co.

UNION CO., NC – The National Weather Service confirms an EF1 tornado with winds around 90 miles per hour touched down in Union County Wednesday morning.

The NWS says the tornado stayed on the ground for about two miles. There is damage along Lawyers Road and the Porter Ridge area.

No injuries were reported.

UNION CO., NC – Union County Emergency Management, in partnership with several public safety agencies, is responding to reports of storm damage following a possible tornado touchdown along Friendly Baptist Church Road in Unionville.

Preliminary assessments indicate damage in the Porter Ridge area. Additionally, there are reported power outages in the area. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported.

The National Weather Service is en route to investigate and confirm whether a tornado touched down.

Damage assessment teams are working in the area to evaluate impacts. Union County Emergency Management director Andrew Ansley has opened the County’s Emergency Operations Center.
