Town Manager: Wadesboro Interim Police Chief retires after K-9 Blitz controversy
WADESBORO, NC – The Wadesboro town manager says Interim Police Chief Jason Eschert has retired after controversy over the killing of a K-9 officer.
According to a news release, Town Manager Wiley Ross said Eschert notified him on May 5th of his intent to retire after serving three months in the interim role, citing threats of violence directed toward fellow officers and other town officials for his departure.
Ross said Eschert indicated escalating threats and incendiary remarks directed at himself and members of his department following the unfortunate April 2 incident involving K-9 officer Blitz, which resulted in the animal’s death, as the reason for his departure.
“While the timing was unexpected, we respect Eschert’s decision and thank him for his service to our community,” Ross said. “We remain committed to the safety and well-being of our citizens as we navigate this period of transition.”
Blitz was killed in the line of duty on April 2 after a suspect chase. He was shot and killed by his handler.
We are told two officers involved in that shooting have resigned.
Eschert served as Interim Chief for just three months. Former Chief Thedis Spencer will take on the interim role on June 6.
