Animal advocacy group calls for more charges in burning possum case

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – An animal advocacy group wants more charges in the case of an opossum seen on video being burned alive. The video, shot in Charlotte in April, sparked outrage not just here but throughout the country.

Officers arrested 30-year-old Cameron Torrence earlier this month and charged him with animal cruelty. He’s the only one charged, despite many believing there were multiple people involved.

Now, the group Animal Wellness Action is pushing NC Wildlife to charge all parties involved in the heinous act. “We’d like to get the other two arrested as well, because these are obviously dangerous people. And it’s not only an injustice for the animal involved, but they’re a danger to the community,” says Animal Wellness Action senior investigator Kevin Chambers.

Torrence has bonded out of jail. He’s due back in court in August. NC Wildlife says their investigation is still ongoing, and are actively working. They say this type of investigation is more complex than it may seem.
