STUDY| Nearly 1 in 5 North Carolinians Admit They’ll Drive Drunk This July 4th

As fireworks and festivities approach, a new 2025 Independence Day Safety Report by Insurance Canopy reveals a troubling trend: 1 in 5 North Carolinians admit they plan to drive drunk this July 4th.

The study, based on a survey of 1,000 U.S. adults, highlights serious safety concerns around the holiday, especially in NC.

Some Key Findings:

  • 69% have witnessed someone drive drunk on the Fourth, yet only 1 in 3 intervened.
  • Millennials are 3x more likely than boomers to take fireworks risks, and Gen Z leads in alcohol-related incidents on the Fourth.
  • 91% light fireworks off without fire extinguisher nearby, while 96% skip protective eyewear.
  • 73% of NC residents don’t trust their neighbors to celebrate responsibly.
  • 38% cite alcohol as the leading cause of firework-related injuries.
