CHARLOTTE, N.C. โ Novant Health is making an investment in the future of medicine by expanding its graduate medical education offerings in Charlotte, marking a new era in Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Centerโs 100-year legacy. With the creation of additional residency programs, Novant Health will welcome more physicians for advanced training, enhancing healthcare in the region.
As part of its commitment to training the innovative healthcare leaders of tomorrow, Novant Health will offer medical school graduates the opportunity to apply for a residency at Presbyterian Medical Center for advanced training in general surgery, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology and neurology, while continuing growth in the existing family medicine residency program by adding an urban family medicine track. Our experienced physicians will help shape residents as they advance their specialized skills, providing a supportive foundation in a dynamic learning environment.

Theย Association of American Medical Colleges projectsย that in the next 10 years, the United States will face a shortage of up to 86,000 physicians in primary and specialty care and one of the contributing factors is a lack of residency positions for medical school graduates. In 2025,ย nearly allย residency positions in North Carolina were filled andย studiesย show where a physician attends residency has a significant impact on where they continue practicing after training. This expansion will not only add opportunity for 100 physicians to continue training, but to do so in state, building a pipeline of highly skilled medical professionals eager to serve a community they have been engaged in.

The residency programs will begin recruiting for the class of 2027 with plans to grow to have 100 residents training in Charlotte no later than 2032.
