Charlotte-Mecklenburg Animal Care & Control issues crisis-level alert

Charlotte, NC – Charlotte-Mecklenburg Animal Care & Control (ACC) has issued a crisis-level alert this afternoon as we head into the weekend.

As of this afternoon, only two open dog kennels remain between the main shelter at 8315 Byrum Drive and the satellite shelter at 2700 Toomey Avenue in Charlotte. We are in urgent need of adopters, fosters, or short-term “Staycation” participants to help make space for incoming animals and avoid the possibility of euthanasia due to overcrowding.

Last Friday, August 15, ACC waived all adoption fees as part of the NBC Clear the Shelters event to increase adoptions and reduce the shelter population.
This year’s event comes at a critical time and will be held tomorrow, Saturday, August 23, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at both shelter locations.

Since the fee-waived adoptions began, 91 dogs and 89 cats have found new homes. However, during the same period, ACC has responded to 580 service calls, and 142 dogs and 126 cats have entered the shelter during this same time frame — more pets than have been adopted.

How the Public Can Help:

  • Adopt: Browse adoptable pets on our website. Remember, all adoption fees are waived through 5 p.m. on Saturday, August 23.
  • Foster: We always need foster caregivers. Come to the shelter—we’ll get you signed up and send you home with a dog or cat.
  • Staycation: Can’t commit long-term? Take a dog home for a short break! Staycations offer temporary relief for the shelter and fun companionship for you.
