UNC Charlotte has dismissed athletic director Mike Hill effective immediately, the school announced Thursday.
Hill served as the athletic director for seven years and signed a four-year contract extension in 2024.
The school said it will now focus on a new approach and a renewed strategic foundation.
βOver the past seven years,Β Mike has led our athletics department with deep commitment,β said Chancellor Sharon L. Gaber.Β βHe played a pivotal role in many important advances for our athletics department, including the move to the American Conference. His hiring of Head Football Coach Tim Albin has also set us on a path toward success. We deeply appreciate Mikeβs service, dedication and contributions, and we wish him the very best in his future endeavors.β
Hill’s tenure at Charlotte has seen its fair share of highs and lows. Along with the move to the American Conference, Charlotte made its first bowl game in program history under Hill in 2019. However, the football team has also gone through four different head coaches and a 31-54 record under his leadership since he was hired in 2018.
Charlotte men’s basketball won the CBI Championship in 2022-23, but Ron Sanchez left the following offseason to return to Virginia. Women’s basketball made the NCAA Tournament in 2021-22 but underwent some changes last year after longtime head coach Cara Consuegra left the program to coach Marquette, where she was an assistant for seven years before joining Charlotte.
Jesh Humphrey, vice chancellor for institutional integrity and general counsel, will oversee athletics in the interim.
