ROCKY MOUNT, NORTH CAROLINA -The N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles is partnering with local fire departments to provide on-site driver license testing for firefighters and first responders who operate heavy emergency vehicles.
Through NCDMV’s Outreach Scheduling Assistance Program, the Division is bringing testing directly to public-safety agencies to reduce travel and improve access for emergency personnel who need a Class B commercial driver license (CDL) or Class A non-CDL credential.
“This initiative ensures firefighters and other emergency responders can be quickly licensed to operate lifesaving equipment while continuing to serve their communities,” said Mike Newsome.
In Harnett Co., 49 firefighters successfully completed knowledge and road testing and received Class B licenses following coordinated sessions recently held in Lillington.
On Oct. 25, testing will begin at the Stedman Driver License Office for more than 160 firefighters across Cumberland Co. And planning is underway with the Wake Forest Fire Department to provide block testing for 80-plus firefighters needing Class A or B licensing in Wake Co.
These sessions will allow local fire departments to schedule group testing on weekends using department vehicles, while DMV examiners handle both written and road tests on site.
