Man killed, woman rescued in overnight Monroe house fire

MONROE, N.C. – A 59-year-old man is dead after a house fire in Monroe early Sunday morning, according to the Union County Sheriff’s Office.

It happened around 3 a.m. at a home on Secrest Shortcut Road. Deputies arrived at the scene with half the home engulfed in flames and heavy smoke throughout.

Firefighters entered the home and found a man near where the fire was the most intense, officials said. He was removed and transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

“We are grateful for the swift actions of our deputies and first responders, but our thoughts and prayers are with the victim’s family and loved ones during this difficult time,” Union County Sheriff Eddie Cathey said.

A woman was rescued from inside the home and was transported to a local hospital for additional treatment.

The Union County Fire Marshal said the fire started from discarded smoking materials in the room where the victim was found.

“This serves as a solemn reminder of how quickly fires can become life-threatening,” Fire Marshal Jon Williams said. “We urge all residents to ensure their home has working smoke alarms, ensure cigarettes and smoking materials are fully extinguished, and to practice fire safety year-round.”
