Mallard Creek High School appealing after losing state championship over runner’s raised hand

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A local high school is fighting back after a controversial call cost them a state championship.

After running and winning the final leg of the 4×400 race, Mallard Creek track star Nyam Brown lifted his hand in the air to celebrate the Mavericks winning a 5th-straight state title.

But they didn’t, because an official disqualified Brown for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Mallard Creek is currently going through the appeals process.

In a statement on Instagram, Brown said he’s always competed with respect and that he would never intentionally taunt another athlete.
