Charlotte Mayor Pro Tem James Mitchell wants to be considered for Interim Mayor role

CHARLOTTE, N.C. –Β  A long-time city council member says he wants to be appointed to the interim Mayor role once Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles steps down in June.

Mayor Pro Tem James “Smuggie” Mitchell sent council a letter Sunday asking for their support. Mitchell wants to create vice chair positions for city council committees and also promises not to run for mayor in 2027.

Former Mayor and County Commission Chair Jennifer Roberts has also expressed interest in the position.
