A’s look for another win
UNDATED (AP) β Four games are being played this afternoon in the big leagues. The winningest team in baseball leads the way as the Athletics, who top the American League West with a record of 62-38, conclude a three-game series at home against the Astros. They’ve split the first two games. The top team in the National League West is also in action this afternoon as the Giants play the Phillies in Philadelphia in the final game of a four-game series. The Giants are looking for the sweep.
The rest of the day games feature the Red Sox playing the Blue Jays in Toronto while the Yankees are home to Texas.
Overall it is an abbreviated schedule of play as there are just seven games this evening. In those contests the White Sox are playing the Twins in Minneapolis, the Indians are at Kansas City, the Angels are home to the Tigers, Baltimore plays at Seattle, Miami is in Atlanta to meet the Braves, San Diego is facing the Cubs in Chicago and the Mets are at Milwaukee.

New deal for White
FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. (AP) βThe Atlanta Falcons have agreed to terms on a new contract with receiver Roddy White. White, who holds the team records for career receptions and yards receiving, agreed to a four-year deal.

Colts fullback unable to play
ANDERSON, Ind. (AP) β Colts fullback Stanley Havili will open training camp on the physically unable to perform list. Havili was Indy’s primary fullback last season after being acquired from Philadelphia in an offseason trade. He has played in 28 games, starting 10, and has rushed 13 times for 29 yards and one TD. He also has 25 catches for 171 yards.
TOUR DE FRANCE
Getting closer to Paris
UNDATED (AP) β The 18th stage of the Tour de France is being contested today. The overall leader remains Vincenzo Nibali of Italy, who picked up some time on his competitors with his finish yesterday. The winner of the 17th stage on Wednesday, which was the shortest of the Tour at 77 miles, was Poland’s Rafal Majka.
The Tour de France will end this Sunday when the racers enter Paris.
PGA-CANADIAN OPEN
Opening round is today
MONTREAL (AP) β Newly crowned British Open winner Rory McIlroy is skipping this week’s Canadian Open in Montreal. The defending champion, Brandt Snedeker, is on hand for the event along with two-time winner Jim Furyk (FYOOR’-ihk), Dustin Johnson and Matt Kuchar (KOO’-chur).
On tap next week is the World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational in Akron, Ohio.
LPGA-INTERNATIONAL CROWN
Team match play event this week
OWINGS MILLS, Maryland (AP) β This week’s LPGA event is an eight-team match play competition with two points awarded for a victory. After fourball matches today through Saturday in two four-team pools, the top two in each pool and the winner of a playoff between the third-place teams will play singles on Sunday. Points from all four days count in the final total.
The team from the U.S. includes Stacy Lewis, Paula Creamer (KREE’-mur), Lexi Thompson and Cristie Kerr.
This is the second year of the event.
CHAMPIONS TOUR-SENIOR BRITISH OPEN
Senior stars hit Wales
PORTHCAWL, Wales (AP) β Bob Tway has the early first-round lead at the British Senior Open. He opened this morning with a 4-under 67.
A week after shooting a 4-under 68 in the final round of the British Open, Tom Watson finished the opening round at 3-over 74.
He calls the course the seniors are playing tougher than the one the PGA stars competed on last week.
Watson, a three-time British Seniors winner, was paired with Fred Couples and Colin (KAH’-lihn) Montgomerie. Couples shot a par-71 while Monty finished with a 1-over 72.
