WEDDINGTON, NC – Some firefighters in Union County will soon be out of job.
“We’re uncertain right now. We have to go back, reevaluate everything, see where we stand and go from there,” said Providence Volunteer Fire Department Chief Kenny Schott.Β
Β
On Tuesday night, the Weddington Town Council voted to terminate a contract with the only fire department in the town limits.Β
Β
“The Mayor doing what he wants to do without any community say so,” said Don Sinclair, a Weddington resident.
Β
The council’s 2-1 vote means the Providence Volunteer Fire Department will be shut down by summer.Β
Β
The department has been serving the community for more than 60 years, and many residents say they’re not happy to see it go.
Β
“No price is too high to pay. People are willing to pay for that kind of service,” said Nancy Anderson, a resident and former Mayor of Weddington. Β
Β
Weddington Mayor Bill Deter says the department is in a deficit. Β He says funds will be exhausted and services will not be met, meaning an uncertain future.Β
Β
Council also voted Tuesday night to begin a contract with the Wesley Chapel Fire Department for just under $700,000 dollars a year.
